TES 3rd Grade Wish List



Rachel Queen- Rachel Queen is originally from Charlotte Hall, MD. She graduated from Liberty University with a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education. In 2015, she had the opportunity to travel to San Juan, Costa Rica on a missions trip. While serving at an orphanage and elementary school there, Rachel made her decision to be a teacher. After moving to Lynchburg in 2015, she dove into that passion by serving at the YMCA of downtown Lynchburg, collecting thousands of books to distribute to students all over Lynchburg, and authoring her own children’s book, Playful Penny Loves to Read. Rachel has a husband, two dogs, and a little girl on the way, due in January! This is her fourth year teaching and she feels so blessed to be a part of the Tomahawk Family. In her spare time, Rachel enjoys spending time with family and friends and leading worship at her church.


Melissa Dorner - Melissa Dorner was born in Pennsylvania, where she lived until graduating high school. After high school, she moved to North Carolina where she attended the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. In 2010, she earned a degree in Elementary Education with a concentration in history. While at UNCW, Melissa competed on the equestrian team. After graduation, Melissa started her teaching career in North Carolina. Melissa has be teaching for 10 years in 2nd and 3rd grade. Melissa moved from Southport, NC to Lynchburg, VA to be closer to family. She loves teaching and is excited to start her third year at Tomahawk Elementary School. Melissa has two kitty cats named Maggie and Lilly. In her spare time, Melissa enjoys reading, running, riding horses, and spending time with family. Melissa is looking forward to getting to know her students and to having a fantastic year.


Morgan Van Zant- Morgan was born and raised in North Carolina. She graduated from East Carolina University with a bachelor's degree in elementary education with a concentration in reading. She recently obtained her masters in education degree in language and literacy from UNC-Wilmington. This will be Morgan's 5th year teaching. She has taught kindergarten and second grade, and has absolutely loved teaching third! She has a dog named Nina, and a cat named Kevin. Morgan enjoys running, drinking coffee, watching movies, and spending time with friends and family. She is looking forward to an amazing school year, and making lots of memories!


Holly Hawkins- Holly Hawkins grew up in Tucson, Arizona and came out to Lynchburg, VA to go to Liberty University. She married a Virginia boy after graduation and stayed in Lynchburg! Holly has been teaching for 30 years and all but three of those years have been here at Tomahawk. Currently she teaches 3rd grade, but started her first 7 years teaching in 2nd grade. She also spent 3 years teaching in a small, private school with Hispanic students in a 1st and 2nd grade combination class in Washington. Holly has a husband, two grown children and a schnauzer. She loves learning how to do new things and teaching children! She also enjoys running, kayaking, fishing, cooking, traveling, crafting, and recently just got involved in pickleball. Brooke Rigler - Brooke Rigler was born in Arizona and moved to Altavista, Virginia when she was three years old. After turning 17, her family moved back to Arizona. Brooke then went on to study at Liberty University and got her degree in elementary education. Brooke is also the B-team volleyball coach at Brookville Middle School. This year will be her third year teaching (last year she had the amazing opportunity to be at CCOLA).
